Despite its ubiquity in Southeast Asian cuisine, the papaya is actually native to the American tropics. Naturalized and grown all throughout the East Indies, Carica Papaya is wholly edible. In northern Celebes, the leaves and flower buds are eaten as stir-fry, while the young unripe fruit is chopped for salads.
