Old City Gate (Pintu Besar) of Batavia
Built by the Dutch in as “De Kasteelpoort” the Great Gate of Batavia was once one of the city's landmarks and the entrance and exit to the East Indies Capital. The Dutch gate was also known to the natives as Pintu Besar and the modern street along the pathway continues to bear the name. The gate was destroyed in the early ’50s of the last century.
Reproduction after a lithograph published in the year 1883 in the Netherlands, based on a drawing by J.C. Rappard. During his posting in the Netherlands Indies from 1842 until 1872, Rappard painted and drew pictures of life in the Indies and various sceneries. Later, back in the Netherlands, they were be made into decorative lithographs.
